Reading-Natalie has finished her 2nd Magic Tree House and we have found Magic Tree House #43 "Leprechaun in Late Winter." This goes great with this groups lesson and Natalie has offered to read it during group reading so that Savannah can hear it too :) Each of the books in this series have a fact tracker book that goes along with the topic of that book. This ones fact tracker is Leprechauns and Irish Folklore...oh then there is a website also that you can play games based off the books and fact trackers. I recommend this series of books to everyone, girls and boys. We are STILL reading The Secret Garden too. I noticed it was a long book but never realized till we already started that there would be a lot of words my 6 year old wouldn't understand so I stop to explain often during this story.Great book to expand vocabulary! They do enjoy it very much just is taking longer than other books. We are also going to be reading the American Girl books about Samantha this month. We just finished reading about Kit during the depression in 1934.

These are soooo yummy. We made this recipe over the weekend and they did not last in the house more than 3 days. Also tried the fishcake recipe off this same site but it was not picture worthy. Tasty but did not hold together like a patty but instead was more like mashed potatoes with cod. The kiddos and I just did not seem to do very well with the Newfoundland recipes.Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09942853577447692170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8738876290706053195.post-43170291421504535392013-03-11T20:14:00.001-07:002013-03-11T20:14:52.991-07:00Pork Toutons

We have been enjoying all the food from Newfoundland! I will have to try them all another time when it isn't as much of a crazy week. Ugh, any of you other moms ever have one of those weeks were everything you cook just doesn't turn out right or look right! Well this recipe came from my husbands Aunt who was born and raised in Newfoundland, but from the picture I do not feel I did it any justice, Sorry Rose. Was a very yummy meal, actually my husband ate 3 of these for dinner last Monday. I am sure we will make this many more times I am sure but next time I will remember to grease the cooking sheet :) We had a regular garden salad on the side.

This is the message we received from my husbands Aunt Rose via facebook:

Pork Toutons
Boil 3 med. Potatoes, and mash them dry.
Salt and pepper
Then add 1tsp baking powder
and ½ cup flour (maybe a little more
and tiny-tiny pieces of salt pork (½ cup)
Be sure to cut it in tiny pieces
Mix it all together while the potatoes are warm.
then make into balls and flatten them out (not thin)
@ 350 oven
and bake on a cookie sheet for 45 minutes
Salt pork comes in a small block, (maybe $3.)
(At the store it where the Ham slices and Hams are)
This is a dinner meal with vegetables and bread.
Newfoundlander’s eat lots of boiled carrots and turnips

This is my favorite of the home made cleaners so far. We go through a lot of oranges in this house so now we have a use for the peels we use to just throw away :) Super easy too! First, fill a large jar with orange peels. Second, pour white vinegar over top of the peels to the top of the jar.Final step, place lid on the jar and let it sit for 2 weeks. I use this for my tub and for my tile floor in my kitchen. We will be trying the same steps but with lemon peels next time!

Another simple cleaner that works GREAT is 12oz. of white vinegar warmed up in a microwavable dish. Pour the vinegar into a spray bottle then add 12oz. of original dawn dish soap. I keep a spray bottle of this mixture by my kitchen sink and use it to wipe down the sink and counters after doing dishes and was AMAZED at how wonderful it was for cleaning the stove top.Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09942853577447692170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8738876290706053195.post-73526808196849044812013-03-07T04:47:00.002-08:002013-03-07T04:47:18.523-08:00ProtectionI have seemed to over book my schedule this past week. Oh man I sure was on overload with having scheduled something all but one day last week and that one day wasn't even enough to catch up on the house. Since homeschooling this year for the first time, I was so worried about my previously public schooled children interacting that I feel we actually are apart of more groups and activities that keep us out of the house even more than before. I love it but I easily over work myself this way.

I have so many things to blog about and so little time. I usually post at night but have been so tired I go to bed with the rest of the family. My husband had the flu this past weekend after our busy week and now my Mr. Henry(my 10 month old son) has caught it too. He went from just seeming to not be the same Monday to spending the night at the local children's hospital over night Tuesday night since he became dehydrated within 24 hours :(

He woke up not feeling any better at 4:30 this morning so I called the overnight doctors line and am suppose to bring him back in first things this morning. Well since I was up I decided no better time(well probably wouldn't have another time today) to shower and read the bible in peace. I sure was feeling God speak to me about that.

I opened to the five minute reflect and pray section in the back of my Bible and the word "Protection" popped out at me right away. Psalms 62 was the chapter it referred me too. This was what God wanted me to wake up and hear from him this morning and then in turn share with you all. I underlines the parts that seemed to reflect most on me today.
My sister took me around thrift stores and consignment shops this last weekend and she found this for Savannah. It was only $2.50 and WOW was she excited! She has been asking for a "old days dress" as she would put it. Since they are into the American Girls books and dolls she feels this makes her look like one :)

We found Natalie's whole outfit between 3 different stores. The shirt was $1.99. The leggings were $1.00 and the shoes were $12.99. The shoes were a little more costly but were brand new at a consignment shop from a higher up children's store originally $49.00. I think we still made a good savings.

I also had found a couple records for a $1.00 each for my husband. Think we will make a once a month or two times a month sister date out of this <3 I sure need a partner when I thrift shop. I have never been a shopper and actually get overwhelmed when I have to look at one item at a time on the racks so we split up who we are looking for and throw in some sisters joking and being silly and it makes the time go by a lot smoother.Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09942853577447692170noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8738876290706053195.post-4089500727965871442013-02-27T20:11:00.001-08:002013-02-27T20:13:03.508-08:00Home Made Laundry Soap

I have been making my laundry soap for just over 4 years. What a savings. I make a 5 gallon bucket which turns into 10 gallons after all is said and done. I use to use Fels-Naptha bar soap but after a lot of research I have switched this time to Kirks Castile since it is more natural and am very happy in how this soap does not thicken as much so there are no chunks to shake up between each use. The girls love helping me make our soap. Start with shredding the bar of soap of your choice (Ivory, Fels-Naptha, Castile) I have a old cheese shredded I keep just for this purpose. Then you melt the soap in 4 cups of water on the stove. You fill a 5 gallon bucket of HOT water half way then add the melted soap to the bucket. Mix well. Add 1/2 c of Borax and 1/2 cup of Washing Soda and mix until all of it is dissolved. Then you fill the bucket to the top with more HOT water. You let sit over night with lid on it and the fill smaller container of choice with lid ( I use an old laundry soap container I recycled from a friend) half way with mixture and other half with more HOT water and shake up. Now you are ready to use just like any other laundry soap. I do like having the old laundry soap container so you can measure it in the cup the same way as store bought. You will need to shake up between uses in case the soap "gels" The Fels-Naptha did but does not seem like the Castile has done that yet. I enjoy the natural fresh smell from the Castile. You can also add 10-20 drops of essential oils in your bucket which I have not done yet. We will try that with our next batch.Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09942853577447692170noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8738876290706053195.post-53885222129975917592013-02-27T19:47:00.001-08:002013-02-27T19:47:34.580-08:00The Boxcar Children Cookbook

We just finished the 3rd Boxcar Children book! Now we are going to cook the recipes from The Boxcar Children Cookbook that go with the stories we read. They are very simple tasty meals but exciting for the girlie's since they are all things they can help with and relate back to the stories while cooking them. Ever recipe has a fun name and then a quote from that part of the story. I found it at our local Home School Buildings used section and then gifted it to the girls as part of their joint Christmas gift this past year. What a deal it was only $3.00 :) If any of you have children who enjoy The Boxcar Children book then this is a great book to find for them. My girls were telling a lady who works at our local library about it she told us how she just got her sister-in-law this book as a gag gift since her family knew her as not being so big on cooking.

So on Monday we started with Jim's Place Hamburgers. This comes from the 3rd book "The Yellow House Mystery." This is 1lb hamburger with a little pepper and 1 small onion chopped and mixed in. Oh and some hamburger buns too he he, simple but a big part of the story.

Yesterday was a crazy busy day so we did not make our Canoe Trip Pancakes from "The Yellow House Mystery" so we will be doing those on Saturday morning instead! Ended up having a late lunch and then snacks from our American Girl party for dinner. Sometime you just gotta have one of those days for your sanity :)

The pancakes are
1 c. flour
1 T. sugar
2 T. margarine, melted
1 T. baking powder
3/4 c. milk
1 egg

Mix it all together and pour about 1/4 c. batter for each one on oiled griddle. They have even more details since it is a children cook book!

Today, Wednesday, we had Beef Stew with Little Vegetables from "The Boxcar Children"
1 T vegetable oil
1 lb beef stew
4 c. water
1 1/2 tsp salt
8 small carrots,scrubbed
8 small onions
1 c. celery, chopped
8-10 small potatoes, scrubbed
1 turnip, sliced(If wanted) we did not
2 c. tomato juice
1/3 c. flour
1 c. more water

1. Put oil and meat in large skillet and cook over medium heat till outside is brown.
2. Add 4 c. water and salt. Turn heat down to low and cook for 1 hour or until meat is tender. Stirring every 15 minutes.
3. Prepare all the veggies.
4. When the meat is tender, add the veggies and tomato juice. Turn heat back to medium. Cook for 20 minutes.
5. Put 1 cup water and 1/3 c. flour into pint jar(we used Tupperware) and shake until mixed. Add to stew and cook till it thickens. Takes around 5 minutes.

This was very very yummy. My anti-veggie hubs even ate it!

Tomorrow, Thursday, I will be doing a day of fasting in prayer for the church we attend has an official launch( it is a newly planted church) this coming Sunday. So dinner is on my husband for him and the kids. Probably fast food or pizza!

Friday we were planning on Jessie's Clam Chowder from "Surprise Island" the 2nd book.
1 slice bacon, diced
1 small onion, chopped
1 c. peeled cubed potatoes
2 c. water
1 can(6 1/2 ounces) minced clams
2 c. milk
3 T. margarine, melted
2 T. flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper

1. Cook bacon in saucepan until crisp.
2. Add onion and cook until soft.
3. Add potatoes and water. Turn on high and bring to boil. Turn down to low and cook until done.
4. Add clams and cook for 2 minutes.
5. Add milk and cook for 5 minutes.
6. Mix melted margarine, flour, salt, and pepper together. Add to the chowder. Cook, stirring constantly, until the chowder is thick and hot!

I will be sure to post how they turn out!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09942853577447692170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8738876290706053195.post-52809947248972468612013-02-26T05:48:00.000-08:002013-02-26T05:48:14.253-08:00What A Day!OH BOY OH BOY What a day we had yesterday. Every family has those days that they just need to go to bed and start over and that was us yesterday! We over did the fun this weekend and they stayed up too late and didn't get much rest so we all felt it yesterday. My 7 year old heard about a grandparent who had been in military school as a child so she decided when she received 17/21 on her spelling she was going to run away to military school. Yes she is my perfectionist. She ran upstairs and actually packed her bag and sat on the back step. :( She came in after 10 minutes and said "Were you really going to let me go?" Of course not but like I said BOY OH BOY what a day.

"These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children." Deuteronomy 6:6-7

Amazed at the reminders the LORD gives me daily on why I am doing what I do every single day. Passing my love for the LORD and work ethics to my children daily no matter what the day brings. Have patience with your children, I am a very impatient person, my biggest task to work on is patience. So pray on EVERYTHING and give your worries to the LORD!Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09942853577447692170noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8738876290706053195.post-27321090525681959082013-02-18T07:44:00.000-08:002013-03-13T20:45:17.234-07:00Lesson #8Weeks 21-23 February 18, 2013- March 8, 2013
Mondays breakfast was a chicken broth I made the night before from left over whole chicken and added Jasmine rice to make a soup. In Japan they will usually add a partially cooked egg or not cooked at all, but I chose to do a hard boiled instead! Also added a couple slices of bacon. Kicked off our week of eating all Japanese food with Lychee drinks and Mochi ice cream found at a local Asian store. We even moved our kitchen table and ate at our coffee table in the dining room! It was so fun.Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09942853577447692170noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8738876290706053195.post-38851748285111078402013-02-17T18:49:00.000-08:002013-02-19T18:42:48.279-08:00Todays Visitor :)

Last Thursday we spent the day doing snow experiments with our friend Andrew who came to play with us. Had to take advantage of all our lovely snow before it melted.Shannonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09942853577447692170noreply@blogger.com0
